Follow the fun!

"Follow the Canyon"
9x12 Oil by Michael Chesley Johnson

If you keep your eyes open, you can find plenty to do this summer.  I'm going to give you a couple good ideas to plan for.  But first, hearty congratulations to Arizona Plein Air Painters Cindy Carrillo, Michael Chesley Johnson, and Becky Joy for having artwork juried into the prestigious American Impressionist Society's 12th Annual National Juried Exhibition: http://www.americanimpressionistsociety.org/2011invitedlist.html

"Follow the Canyon (above) was painted as a studio knife demonstration for a workshop I taught in Ohio," says Michael Chesley Johnson.  "It's painted on untempered hardboard that had been sized with Gamblin PVA followed by one coat of Golden Acrylic Matte Medium.  This transparent coat allows the warm, mid-value tone of the hardboard to show through, making for an exciting color harmony.  The scene is a location in Zion National Park's Kolob Canyon region; I took a series of photographs of this particular spot because it had some lovely snow, even in late April."

APAP Members will want to save August 14, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, for a very special paint-out to be held at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on SR60 in Central Arizona: http://ag.arizona.edu/bta/.  As many of you know, Arizona State Parks have been struggling to stay open, and BTA especially so after a recent fire damaged part of the area.  Paint Out Day is an effort to draw more visitors to the park and hopefully generate some income to help with repairs.  Cindy Carrillo tells me there will be no contest or prizes, but she hopes all artists will come and help support the Arboretum with their artwork, and with their wallets if they can.  If you arrive a little early, it shouldn't be a problem.  Bring a friend!!

Check the APAP Website paint outs and events page on Friday afternoon for more workshops and information about upcoming events.  As always, if you have good news or a paint-out to publicize, please write to me, Sandy Farley, at farleystudios (at) cox.net.  We love to see photos of your work, too, so please send them along as attachments!

"Sunshine" Shines at "Best of America Show"

"Garden Sunshine" by Beth Page, 12" x 16" oil

Congratulations to Arizona Plein Air Painter Beth Page, whose work "Garden Sunshine" was juried into the National Oil and Acrylics Painters Society's "Best of America 2011" show. The NOAPS show is hanging at the Dunnegan Gallery of Art in Boliver, MO, and runs from September 11 through October 28, 2011.
To learn more about Beth's work, visit her website at  http://www.merrybethpage.com/ .

Do you have an event or honor you'd like to share on the APAP blog?  Send information and photos to Sandy Farley at farleystudios (at) cox.net.

The APAP Board of Directors is accepting bios & photos for our Member of the Month page on the APAP website.  Update your bio and send it, with a photo of yourself, and any work you'd like showcased, to farleystudios (at) cox.net.  You may be selected for an upcoming "Member of the Month" spotlight!  Entries are selected at random from submitted bios, and all those not yet selected are added back into the hat for future months' drawings.  What a nice way to introduce yourself to members you haven't yet met, and to prospective buyers!

Paint the Aspens & Treasures of the Forest

White Mountain Nature Center's Susan Taggert releases a rehabilitated owl.

Arizona Artist Gwen Meyer wrote to let us know that Paint the Aspens -- always a popular paint-out event for APAP members -- will not be held this year.  In its place, Gwen suggests a trip to the White Mountains for the August 27th "Treasures of the Forest".  Vendors are encouraged to apply for a reasonably-priced booth, and if you like to do live painting demonstrations, all the better!  Here's the LINK .

Happy July!

Hope you all made it through the 4th of July celebrations no worse for wear.  The monsoons are here and most sane folks in the hotter parts of Arizona have gone north or are staying indoors during the daylight hours.  If you're doing something interesting this summer, tell us about it!

Rita Goldner, APAP Publicity Co-Chair
A lot of folks in Arizona know Rita Goldner already.  She's one of the busiest women I've ever met, and we're lucky to have her on our Board of Directors as the Publicity Co-Chair, along with Jeff Dolan.
Get to know Rita on our website's Member of the Month page: http://www.arizonapleinairpainters.com/ .
