We're Headed North in November!

Happy Fall, APAP painters!!  Here's a wonderful painting opportunity we've been looking forward to for awhile!  Please don't miss this chance to paint some of Arizona's most fascinating scenery: Lee's Ferry, Colorado River, Vermilion Cliffs State Park, Navajo Bridge, and more!

Marble Canyon Lodge http://www.marblecanyoncompany.com/accommodations.html

Take I-17 to I-40 East in Flagstaff. Get off I-40 at exit for Lake Powell/Page Rt 89 & 89A. Take Rt 89 north to Bitter Springs on the Navajo Reservation. Rts. 89 & 89A will split: take Rt 89A (left) to Marble Canyon.

Marble Canyon Lodge 800-726-1789; rooms are $40-single $45-50-double (AARP discounts available).
We’ll paint from my front porch Saturday morning starting at 8:00 am. Coffee and donuts will be served. We can go down to Lee’s Ferry, or out on the old bridge and paint the river gorge; there are lots of great places to paint in the area.

Marble Canyon Lodge has a big, long table in the dining room for large groups for dinner, so plan to join the rest of the APAP painters and their guests for dinner there Saturday evening.

AAA Jury-In Applications Due Sept 29!

Great news: APAP has just been accepted as a league member in Arizona Art Alliance (AAA)!

AAA is an umbrella organization over 34 art leagues, and holds semi-annual shows (December Holiday Show and Spring Show) in their gallery at the Pavilions Shopping Center in Scottsdale. Also, each member league gets its own 2-week show there, in rotation.  Individuals in member clubs can apply for juried status to be eligible to enter the Holiday Show, and a special show in November honoring veterans. (They are having a gala reception for that show, with the Chamber of Commerce, City Council, a color guard, VFW, and Governor Brewer.) Non-veterans can be in that show.

IMPORTANT: Act NOW for Fall & Winter Shows!  Details on the jurying application process has been sent to APAP members by email.

Your application, jurying fee & CD has to be received by Friday Sept 29!! If you submit, you'll be notified immediately of acceptance, then if you choose, you can apply for entry to the shows. The forms for those, and the prospectus, are also on their website.

The deadline for application to the November show, themed "America - What a Great Country!" is October 19. It costs $35 for a 3-foot x 6-foot panel.

The deadline for application to the Holiday Show, themed "Give the Gift of Art" is October 18.  It costs $50 a panel.

The Holiday Show is coordinated through your rep, Rita Goldner, so the forms are not on the AAA website. If you're interested, email ritagoldner@msn.com as soon as you get notification of your juried status, and she'll email you the forms and info.

Other news from AAA:

- The Workshop Classroom
The room is just remodeled; it's huge, with kitchen facilities and color-corrected lighting. It's available for $50 rent if you want to teach workshops and the AAA will advertise on their website and with email notices. They'll be teaching drawing and painting to veterans after the holidays, and are looking for volunteers to teach those classes. There are several workshops scheduled now, please check that page on the AAA website at azartalliance.com.

- The Gift Shop
The gift shop has been enlarged, and you need not be juried to display small items there, like prints and cards. I also saw some 8x10 oil plein air studies on panels, not framed, in a basket for $100 each. Call Kelley Smith at 623-229-6720 for more info.

- The Scottsdale Street Fairs
Starting in October, the street fairs will be held on Sundays, right in front of the gallery. They encourage artists to demo in front of the building during the fairs. Any sales will be run through the gallery.

A Couple of Superior Opportunities in September/October!

Hello APAP Painters!

Publicity Gig in Superior, AZ
We will meet on Wednesday, September 26 in Superior at Porter's Cafe'
at 7:30 a.m - 8:30 a.m. and paint the town (literally). Photo op for the group is between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. After that, more painting and optional coffee or early brunch/lunch.
Porter's is on the "main drag" up the hill, and Superior is tiny. You cannot get too lost. Just take US 60 east past Boyce Thompson Arboretum until you see the signs. Bear left (and up) into the business district. Porter's will be on the left 3/4 way down. There is lots of "rustic charm" in Superior. Mountains are in the distance.

Start a painting on Sept. 26th and finish it on Oct. 20th if you like. Tweak it in the studio, if you like. Bring your cameras for reference photos and group shots. Plan to have your work framed and ready on the 20th. People have already been asking if the art will be for sale.

October 20, Saturday APAP paint-out at Superior
Complimentary breakfast is served between 8 and 10 at Porter's Cafe' for APAP member participants. There will be a car show in progress, so bring your cameras if you paint cars and trucks.

We may sell and possibly display our work. Bring a frame with all the fixings and one or two other plein air pieces if you like. We have been exempted from buying a Superior vendor license for this event.

Bring your Arizona Sales Permits with you. Also have cards and brochures. As usual, Toni's trusty Toyota Studio 2 will have a hammer, screw driver, and a loaded point driver on board. Wire and D rings or eye hooks are up to you.

Toni also will have APAP name tags. Put one on your chest, hat, or other g-rated part. Put one on your rig where people can read it. She'll have a stamp that says, "APAP, Arizona Plein Air Painters". We can stamp your boards so that people learn about our group and know you are a member. Please sign in when you arrive so we may include your name in the next newsletter.

Toni says she's planning to leave for Superior at an ungodly hour to be there by 6:30-7:00a.m. on the 20th. (Aagh!)

THIS IS IMPORTANT: You need to r.s.v.p to Toni for the September 26th and for the paint-out on October 20th.  Porters would like to know how many breakfasts to serve on the 20th, and Toni needs to know how many name tags and supplies to bring.

Guest opportunity: Non-APAP members are welcome as guests at this event, and invited to join the club, too!

There will be a publicity photo shoot for the artists going to Superior. It will be scheduled soon. We will be photographed painting, take a group photo, and end up on brochures and possibly signage. It's great publicity for us.

I hope you enjoy these opportunities.
