You ought to be in pictures!

A warm Arizona welcome to our newest artist member Heather Coen, formerly of Colorado!  Welcome and hope to see you soon at an APAP paint-out.
________________
Speaking of which, our next paint-out is Saturday, December 7, beginning at 9 am, at the Capstone Films Back Lot -- 30005 N. 59th St., Cave Creek.  Our host is Paint-Out Coordinator Toni Perrin.
Genuine Rust available to paint!
The back lot is an opportunity to paint various subjects. There are old buildings, interesting doorways, old trucks, tractors, a boat, horses, and interiors. There's even a trashy trailer (of no great interest) that has been used as a prop.. Make friends with "Budzilla," the tortoise. She used to be "Bud" but someone discovered he was really a she. (Now just HOW did they DO that?)

Everything is very rustic. Actually, this is a rust-covered paradise for an outlandish assortment of junk. Oddities and nostalgia ooze from every corner. It's "kitsch heaven". Put away your notions of grand vistas with majestic mountains and stately cacti. Come paint some true grit. Remember, all that you see will have been used in feature films, and are actually movie props.

Directions couldn't be easier. This location is just north of Dixileta between Scottsdale Road and Tatum Blvd. Google Maps link: http://goo.gl/maps/wRdQQ
From the west or north:
• I 17 to Carefree Highway
• East on Carefree to Cave Creek
• South (right) on Cave Creek to Tatum
• Left on Tatum to Dixileta
• North (left) on Dixileta to 59th St.
• North (left) on 59th to 30005. This will be very near the corner, on your right.

From the south:
• Come to the intersection of Scottsdale Rd. and Dixileta.
• West on Dixileta to 59th St.
• North (right) on 59th St. to 30005. This will be very near the corner, on your right.
Parking: Please park in front of the gate. The gate should be open. If not, push the button which will either open the gate or call Ric to do so. There is a tall fence with a security camera up high. The gate is nothing special, so look closely for it.

Eric Slayton has enjoyed a busy schedule showing around the country this Fall, and is currently exhibiting at Mountain Artist Guild's Gallery in Prescott through November 1st.  If you have a chance stop by, enjoy his beautiful paintings, and take a look at the gallery itself.  This gallery will be the location of our Annual Members' Exhibition next year, and we have Eric to thank for his suggestion and assistance in acquiring space in MAG's Gallery.

A message from Rita Goldner:
A lady who runs farmers' produce markets in Carefree, 35th and Cactus, Hilton Village, and a few other places, is opening a new one in Community Park, 3151 North Litchfield Rd., between Thomas Rd. and Indian School Rd. in Avondale, AZ.  Opening day is Saturday, Oct 26, 8:00 AM to noon, and they will run every Saturday after that. They want plein air painters to come, and asked me to spread the word. You can set up anywhere and paint the veggies and/or the people. They will have a free 10x10 tent to sell your paintings if you want. Painters who sell can use the market's credit card machine if they pay the service fee, less than 4%.
Her name is Carole DeCosmo 623-695-9614 and she asks that if people want to come, call her so she'll know to set up the tent.

Don't forget, this Saturday is also our monthly paint-out:

Saguaro Lake/Verde River
Saturday, August 31
Our August location has been changed due to the unhappy event of the Yarnell fire. We will hold our APAP paint-out at Saguaro Lake on August 31st.
Toni Perrin will be your host for August.  Email is ToniPerrinStudio(at)icloud.com.

You need a Tonto National Forest Day Pass to park at these locations. They are available at Circle K gas stations, some grocery stores (i.e. Bashas in Carefree). One pass per car is required. If you have an annual Tonto pass, you are already covered.
Bring a cooler, drinks, and a picnic lunch for a tail-gate party. Or, if you prefer, have lunch at the nearby Lakeside Restaurant at the Marina. If the weather is a bit toasty, you can seek shelter under one of the ramadas. You can also paint from the piers.
SAGUARO LAKE August 31st -- Morning Location
Saguaro Lake is located on Bush Highway north of Mesa Arizona. There is a Marina and restaurant parking. When you get to the location, do not pull in there. Go straight through the gate, past the Ranger's shack. Follow the road until you find a place you want to park. Toni will be there from 6:30 a.m., but the official morning paint-out is from 8:30 to lunch time. Just arrive when you can and stay as long as you like.
Get a map and locate the intersection of Shea Blvd and SR87, located at Fountain Hills. This is northeast of Scottsdale, and northwest of Mesa.
From the north:
I 17 south to 101
East on 101 to Shea Blvd.
East on Shea Blvd to SR87 (Beeline Hwy).
North on SR87 to Bush Highway.
Right (east) on Bush Hwy to the Marina turnoff.
Left at the Marina to the entry gate for the lake access.
The Marina gates will be closed before 9 a.m.

WATER USER'S RECREATION AREA -- August 31st afternoon location.
After lunch we will exit south (left) on Bush Highway for about a mile. There are gorgeous cliffs and trails down to the Verde River. This is an afternoon painting location because the western sun lights the rock formations. Pull into the large parking lot on your left and find a wonderful spot. Stay as long as you like.
Be brave; take the trail down to the river. Go ahead and get your feet wet.

Shows and Paint-Outs Are Still Hot in Arizona

New Mexico's Finest, 16x20 oil on panel by Geri Acosta is showing now at Tucson's Skyline Country Club

A warm welcome to our newest member, Kyle Rafferty of Phoenix! Meet Kyle at an upcoming paint-out.

We are glad to applaud the election of Lois Griffel as the newest Master Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society. Lois brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in Impressionist painting. From Lois’s website: “Once you enter the glorious world of Impressionist color, you will never go back. My eyes were opened to seeing “the light” by the great artist and teacher, Henry Hensche. Hensche dedicated his life’s work to the principles of Impressionism and did not consider it a separate painting approach. I believe, as he did, that Impressionism is the universal foundation of beautiful color in all contemporary painting today. Charles Hawthorn said: ‘Anything under the sun is beautiful if you have the vision.’ It is a great privilege for me to pass this vision on to you.” Lois was a student of Hensche and in 1986 was given the great honor of succeeding Hensche, becoming the third director of the Cape Cod School of Arts. The school was established by Hawthorne in 1899. You can learn more about Lois on her website, www.loisgriffel.com.

Geri Acosta is showing her latest work at the Skyline Country Club, 5200 N. St Andrews in Tucson (http://skylinecountryclub.com/).  Her work will hang with that of three other artists’ from June 8th through Sept 6th.  Reception is June 13th at 6 pm, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres, wine samplings, and cash bar.

Eric Slayton is exhibiting his work with other notable artists at the Mountain Artist Guild Gallery in Prescott through November 1st

Thanks to Diane Scholar and Toni Perrin who hosted the June 8 paint-out at the Arboretum at Flagstaff.  Participating members included Nori Thorne, Karen Petrovich, Diane Scholar, Toni Perrin, Kyle Rafferty, Bob Dalegowski, Roger Grulke, Martha Goodrich, Rita Elkins and Barbara Donahue.  Paintings from the paint-out are for sale and will hang at the Arboretum through July 2nd.

If you have news to share, please send it to me at arizonapleinairpainters (at) gmail.com.  Information on upcoming paint-outs will be sent soon.  If you’d like to join in the fun with the Wednesday Paint-Outs at various locations around the state, contact Toni Perrin at toniperrinstudio (at) icloud.com.

APAP Artists Busy With Shows, Events

Michael Chesley Johnson has updated his plein air workshop list, which is available on our website here: http://arizonapleinairpainters.com/Asset.asp?AssetID=34358&AKey=ZW7DW68M.

Marla Smith has been busy with shows lately. She's joined by 5 other women at 'Tis Gallery in Prescott, in a show called "Broad Strokes" (yes, it's a deliberate joke). The show runs through April 14.
Granite Mountain Evening by Marla Smith is among plein air treasures at the OPS Plein Air Salon in Texas.
Her lovely work Granite Mt Evening is among those selected for the Outdoor Painters Society's Plein Air Southwest Salon show at Southwest Gallery, Dallas, TX. Awards Reception and paint-out are April 6. Here's a closer look: http://swgallery.com/artwork_d.aspx?artist_id=1373&style_id=28&artwork_id=10048.

Says Marla about her ethereal painting, "This one I painted right before Christmas when we had snow. I painted this from my studio porch. It took me 2 nights to complete it. The snow held on the ground because it was so cold, but of course the clouds had changed. I first blocked in the mountain and clouds, knowing they would not be the same 2 evenings in a row. So I got that in, then the foreground on the 2nd evening. This is a typical winter scene when the sun goes down in the evening -- the mountain just glows with this beautiful pinky/salmon color. I have painted this scene so many times. Why? Just because it's there, waiting for me to do so."
