2012 CASA GRANDE PLEIN AIR PAINTING EVENT

NOTE: FEES HAVE BEEN WAIVED.

WHAT: 2012 Casa Grande Plein Air Painting Event, sponsored by the City of Casa Grande Arts & Humanities Commission. The event is open to any artist who paints using the Plein Air technique in oil, watercolor, acrylic, or pastel. Plein Air (open air) paintings are executed outdoors from real life, as opposed to being painted from photographs in a studio. Both painter and subject must be outdoors, and photographs are NOT used. Contemporary plein air artists capture moments in time that reflect the ever-changing colors, light and shadows, temperature and shifting elements. This art form requires stamina, focus and the ability to be completely absorbed in the work regardless of what Mother Nature is throwing at them.

WHEN: Saturday, February 11, 2012, 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. This date has been chosen to coincide with other City Centennial Celebrations events being held throughout the community.

WHERE: In Beautiful Casa Grande, Arizona. This event is hosted by the Casa Grande Arts & Humanities Commission.

Arizona Plein Air Painters artist Mary Lois Brown took First Place honors in the El Valle Annual Art Show with her plein air oil painting, “A Peaceful Place”.

Arizona Plein Air Painter’s 4th Annual Juried Members’ Show in Sedona, AZ, is open to all APAP members in good standing, and features a focus on Arizona’s Centennial Celebration. The Green Fields Plein Air Paint-Out in Tucson features 3 painting sessions with models on Thursday through Saturday, February 9, 10, 11. One session will be set up to reflect the rich history of Green Fields with Russell True (from White Stallion Ranch) featuring horses and riders. Other modeling opportunities will include students for portrait studies, and cowboys from the White Stallion Ranch. You can paint one or all of the days of the event which spans Tuesday the 7th through Saturday the 11th.

Celebrating Arizona’s Centennial Year

March 29 - April 11, 2012

What – APAP Annual Juried Members Show
When – March 29 - April 11, 2012
Receptions – Friday March 31, from 4 pm-8 pm and Friday, April 6, from 4 pm-8 pm
Where –Sedona Art Center Community Gallery, 15 Art Barn Road in Sedona, AZ
Who – All paid APAP members are eligible to enter. You may renew your dues with this form.
How – Send CD with up to 5 .jpg images. Jury will select up to 3 pieces – 1 Studio, 2 Plein Air.
How Much – Entry fee is $35, this is separate from your annual membership dues.
Entry Deadline – Checks and CDs must be received no later than January 31st.
Notification – Acceptance letters will go out by February 29th.
Delivery – of paintings to the gallery between 9:30 – Noon, Thursday, March 29. Don’t be late.
Pick-Up – of paintings from the gallery between 3 – 5 pm, Wednesday, April 11. No exceptions.
Sales – There will be an 80/20 split, 80% to the artist, 20% to APAP.

Entry Submission Requirements:
o This year, to celebrate Arizona’s Centennial Year, all entries must have an Arizona focus or subject to be considered.
o Send a CD with up to 5 images – up to 2 Studio (max 18” x 24”) and up to 3 Plein Air works (max 16” x 20”) completed in the last two years and not previously shown at an APAP show.
o Along with CD, send entry fee check and correctly completed entry form; please print legibly.
o CD images should be saved as .jpg files, not too large – between 200kb – 1000kb, 72 ppi is fine.
o Image files should be saved and labeled as follows: title-size-price-P (for plein air) or S (for studio). Example: Aspen-Glow-11x14-$750-P.jpg
o Your entry form will contain the same information – they should match.
o Label CD with the Artist's Name in marker. Do not put artist's name in image file.
o Jury Committee will select up to one Studio, and up to two Plein Air pieces from your entry.
o All jury decisions are final.
o Delivery/shipping instructions will accompany acceptance letter.

Note: No substitutions of accepted works, no price changing, No Exceptions!

Framing:

Accepted Paintings must be framed in good quality frames and properly wired for hanging.
No saw-tooth hangers, or skimpy, poorly-constructed frames will be accepted.
APAP retains the right to reject paintings based on bad framing practices.

Arizona Plein Air Painters embarks on its 5th year with new changes in the board, and new blood and enthusiasm working behind the scenes to set up great opportunities for our members.

This year, our esteemed founder and past president David Haskell has chosen to continue on the Board of Directors for APAP, and past vice president Cody DeLong is working on personal projects, although I suspect we'll see him now and again helping with various shows and paint-outs.

If you can only do single tasks, like baking for the show reception, helping with artwork intake, sitting the show for a few hours, working on the club members' biography book, or other individual tasks, please take a few moments right now to write to one of the Committee Chairs and tell them how you'd like to help.

Just like the cactus condo at the top of this blog, there are plenty of places you'd be at home in this organization, and it's just no fun if we don't have you here with us making our organization better for our fellow artists. If you don't have available time for the show, then how about showing us a wonderful place to paint by hosting a paint-out near you? It's so easy -- pick your time & place, then tell Cindy, Sandy or Rita, and we'll publicize it for you. What could be easier? And what a fun way to meet other Arizona artists!

2nd Annual Green Fields Plein Air Event in Tucson

An artist at the First Green Fields Country Day School Plein Air Event takes advantage of lovely foliage on the school's campus as his subject. Event planners promise expanded opportunities next year, including models available on site.

Green Fields Country Day School in Tucson will host its Second Annual Plein Air Event the week of February 7 – 11, 2012 at 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra. Artists are welcome to paint on one or all of these days, and subjects include architecture, gardens, onsite models, and a chicken coop, among others.
The paint out will end with the awarding of 1st , 2nd, and 3rd prizes. An exhibit of the paintings will be held on Saturday, February 11. Arizona artist Linda Glover Gooch will teach “Plein Air Boot Camp” at Scottsdale Artists’ School Oct. 19-21, 2011. This is an indoor class designed to prepare students for plein air painting. This class will cover the desired equipment needed for outdoor painting and prepare them to attend future outdoor plein air classes. Students are encouraged to bring outdoor equipment if owned, or this class will aid them in knowing what to purchase. How to pack equipment efficiently with the bare minimum of supplies will be covered.
Students will paint studies from photos, helping the student understand how to simplify what they see and create a study from the scene. Demonstrations will be done daily. Photos will be supplied by the instructor. This class is a must for anyone wanting to start or improve on plein air painting.

The town is nestled under Apache Leap, in the Tonto National Forest, 60 miles east of Mesa Arizona. From Tempe, it is about a 50 minute trip east on Hwy. 60. So much to paint: old adobes, old tin roofs, striking mountains and lush desert washes. The town is 3 miles east of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. There are wonderful mountain & street views with adobe brick buildings, good early morning light on Picketpost Mountain, and really dramatic afternoon light on Apache Leap.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum Paint-Out coordinator Cindy Carrillo says, "Thanks to all of you who braved the heat to come out and paint at the Arboretum August 14th. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves; the Arboretum is really special to me, and I really like getting people to come and check it out.

"If you have a chance, come back up and pick a different location: the old mansion sitting off the cliff, the ancient greenhouse/Smith house made of stone, the wash after a heavy downpour- so many lovely, unusual spots. If you do, please send me a picture of you painting there as Paul Wolterbeek and I are collecting images to use on the BTA website to encourage painters from all over the nation to come visit."

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 9 am - afternoon

At Sue & Howard Davis’s Home in Sedona

Directions:

Take Highway 89A, West Sedona, turn north on Dry Creek Rd. and continue over Dry Creek to “T” in the road (about 3 miles); turn left at the “T” about 2 miles on Boynton Pass Drive towards Enchantment Resort.

At the next “T”, turn left over Boynton Pass Road, 3 miles.

When you come to the end of the paved road, follow on .8 miles on the gravel dirt road until you come to a straight part of the road. Turn north (on your right) going west. Look for a large sign on the gate type area that says “Bear Mountain Road, Private Road, Dead End”. Look for a yellow plate on the post there with “DAVIS” and an arrow. Go north about a block until the road turns west. Follow the yellow-plate Davis signs .4 mile west, then turn south on road and west again to gate. You’ll see a large 575 Sign by the gate and a German Shorthaired Pointer sign on gate; on other side of gate is a large red rock with “Davis” on it.

Enter through the gate and be sure to close the gate behind you after you enter. Address is 575 Bear Mountain Rd.

Please note: On most GPS maps, the road goes right to Bear Mountain Rd., then quits after it turns north, so just follow the yellow signs about .6 mile to our gate. We will be open to the group from about 9 a.m. until people go home in afternoon. We’ll have available restrooms inside, drinks, etc. Some food available, but bring your own sack lunch and all art materials for plein air painting on the grounds. Views of the Red Rock Mountains from our yard are almost 360 degrees.

"Follow the Canyon"

If you keep your eyes open, you can find plenty to do this summer. I'm going to give you a couple good ideas to plan for. But first, hearty congratulations to Arizona Plein Air Painters Cindy Carrillo, Michael Chesley Johnson, and Becky Joy for having artwork juried into the prestigious American Impressionist Society's 12th Annual National Juried Exhibition: http://www.americanimpressionistsociety.org/2011invitedlist.html

"Follow the Canyon (above) was painted as a studio knife demonstration for a workshop I taught in Ohio," says Michael Chesley Johnson. "It's painted on untempered hardboard that had been sized with Gamblin PVA followed by one coat of Golden Acrylic Matte Medium. This transparent coat allows the warm, mid-value tone of the hardboard to show through, making for an exciting color harmony. The scene is a location in Zion National Park's Kolob Canyon region; I took a series of photographs of this particular spot because it had some lovely snow, even in late April."

APAP Members will want to save August 14, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, for a very special paint-out to be held at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on SR60 in Central Arizona: http://ag.arizona.edu/bta/. As many of you know, Arizona State Parks have been struggling to stay open, and BTA especially so after a recent fire damaged part of the area. Paint Out Day is an effort to draw more visitors to the park and hopefully generate some income to help with repairs. Cindy Carrillo tells me there will be no contest or prizes, but she hopes all artists will come and help support the Arboretum with their artwork, and with their wallets if they can. If you arrive a little early, it shouldn't be a problem. Bring a friend!!

Arizona Artist Gwen Meyer wrote to let us know that Paint the Aspens -- always a popular paint-out event for APAP members -- will not be held this year. In its place, Gwen suggests a trip to the White Mountains for the August 27th "Treasures of the Forest". Vendors are encouraged to apply for a reasonably-priced booth, and if you like to do live painting demonstrations, all the better! Here's the LINK .

I know a lot of Arizona Plein Air Painters members have run off to cooler climes to paint, but a few of us are still here toughing it out (and dreading the 117-degree heat forecast for this coming Saturday). Despite the minor amount of whining we do, most of us still find ways to enjoy painting in Arizona year-'round. Here's a perfect example:

A couple updates to casual paint-outs you should know about: Sue Davis's planned paint-out for June has been rescheduled tentatively to July due to pesky cedar mites near her home (aargh!). Sue tells us the heat kills them off and they should be gone by mid-to-late July. Also, Bob Dalegowski has a June 14 paint-out planned jointly with Northern Arizona Watercolor Society members. Check the APAP website for more details coming soon.

Here's a neat opportunity for you and your paint-out partners: PleinAir Magazine is looking for plein air paintings of painters painting plein air for its "Painter Painting" feature on the last page of each magazine! Yep. Paint a plein air piece, and include another artist in the act of painting outdoors, then send a high-resolution .jpg of your artwork as an attachment to an email providing the title, size, medium, year, and artists involved to: steve@pleinairmagazine.com .

Definitive Plein Air

Definitive Plein Air is outdoor painting from direct-study. It is a creative process that uses no secondary references, such as memory, photographs, reproductions, projections, camera displays, or electronic displays of any kind, including the otherwise 'historically traditional' uses of a camera obscura or camera lucida, and all compositional work is begun and completed by the artist at the point-of-view, via eye-to-subject-to-canvas interpretive study. Such works may be created by either alla prima [all at once] method, or through recursive study - multiple visits to the point-of-view over two or more days.
The Perceptual Artists Society and the Open Air InvitationalThe Perceptual Artists’ Society (PAS) promotes the role of perceptual painting and sculpture, and maintains that direct study and perceptual work will continue to underscore and have direct relevance to contemporary art and its continued development. Membership is open to all artists who work from life, whose visual source of inspiration is based on the act of looking, and who understand the enduring role of perceptual art.

To emphasize the role of perceptual painting as integral to the concept of plein-air landscape painting, the PAS will hold its first plein air event: a biennial Open Air Invitational in 2011. The purpose of the Invitational is to demonstrate and exhibit some of the best examples of Definitive Plein Air works. In other words, we want to support and celebrate the artists in our midst who work with earnest determination to see and paint with their own eyes and hands, the outdoor subject in its natural, uncompromised, state of being.

The event will give ten professional and ten student painters almost three months to complete five landscapes, worked exclusively from life with no reference to secondary source material, with at least one of the works completed in Yavapai County, Arizona. A private viewing and awards ceremony will be held on October 6, 2011, in the Verde Gallery on the Verde Valley Campus of Yavapai College in Clarkdale, Arizona, and the exhibition will be open to the public from October 7 – November 6, 2011. A first prize of $1500 will be awarded, with more awards to be announced.

The Third Annual Flagstaff Arboretum Paint-Out is scheduled this summer for Sunday, June 26, 9 am to 5 pm, and Monday, June 27 from 9 am to noon. Attendance is limited to twenty APAP members, who may reserve a spot in this event by contacting Dawn Sutherland at artbydawn@mac.com as soon as possible.

This is an outstanding opportunity to showcase and sell your works in the Arboretum's lobby after the paint-out during the following month. The Arboretum gets 30%, and since it's not a judged contest, there are no entry fees. Hard to beat!

Paintings must be framed and ready to hang after the paint-out.

Lost Dutchmen Paintout March 16th

Hello APAP painters!

We will meet at Lost Dutchman State Park at 1 p.m. for a wonderful paint-out. You will find me at the Siphon Draw Trailhead (restrooms, ramadas) at 12:30.

Don't forget that there is a daily entry fee unless you have an AZ State Parks Pass.

For painters who prefer to work in the morning, please feel free to join the Sonoran Arts League Wednesday Troops at the Crosscut Trailhead which is the first right-hand turnoff just past the Park.

March 16: Two time options.

8:00 a.m Crosscut Trailhead

This is a trailhead just north of the Superstitions at Lost Dutchman Park.

Follow directions to Lost Dutchman Park (below), but do not go in.

Continue on 88 slowly and watchfully. The road is curved and signs are easy to miss.

About 1/4 mile north of the park entrance there will be a National Forest sign. Shortly after, the First Water Trailhead sign will be on the right. There is a short turn-off lane.

(If you see the 202 mile marker, you have gone too far.)

Turn right onto the dirt/gravel road. Go to the Crosscut Trailhead (1/2 mile in).

Directions to Lost Dutchman Park. Please remember that we are not painting there, but will be on the trail farther north.

101 south to #60.
60 east to #88 (Apache Trail)
Left (north) on #88 to Lost Dutchman State Park (about 5 miles.)

Arizona Trailhead at Picket Post- April 10th

Location: the Arizona Trailhead at Picket Post Mountain- 3 miles west of Superior on Hwy. 60. 1 hour east of Mesa on Hwy. 60.

Directions and Subject matter:
Here are the driving directions for the Arizona Trail head at Picketpost.

From Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway) traveling from Phoenix east to Superior. The turn off is approximately 9 miles east of Florence Junction, you will climb Gonzalez Pass on Hwy 60 then start dropping down, at .4 miles east of milepost #221, you will turn south on Forest Road 231. This turn off on FR 231 is only 5 miles West of Superior. The turn off on FR 231 comes up fast so be prepared to make that right turn. Signs on the highway say "Picketpost Trailhead". Thompson Arboretum is only 1.7 miles further up the road from this turn off.

FR 231 is gravel but well travelled. You will immediately see the old windmill. I will be camped just beyond the windmill. You should be able to see trucks and horse trailers. There will be horse back riders, one donkey and perhaps one mule rider. So if someone wants to paint horses, donkey or mule there will be the opportunity. The riders usually leave to go riding 9:30 -10 AM. We will be camped there from April 7th thru the 12th if anyone wants to camp with us they are welcome to do so. I also will be painting each of these days so anyone can join we if they want.

I have attached a picture of my truck and trailer for reference and will put up a APAPA sign in the window of the truck. My cell phone number is 520-678-7456 if anyone gets lost.

Scenes to paint are the big mountain, Picketpost, there are saguaros, old windmill and the stone corral, great mountain scenes in morning and evening and then there is the Arboretum close by. Painters may also drive to the trailhead approx 1 mile for other scenes of interest. We can get together for lunch around 11:30 -12 noon. Reminder there are no bathrooms, other than the trailhead that has a pit toilet. I will have drinking water if anyone needs.

Picket Post at the Arizona Trailhead, just west of Superior on Hwy. 60. East of Mesa about 50 minutes.
This is a lush riparian habitat with mesquite and palo verde trees, ocotillo, mountain ranges all around you. Lil and her friends will be camped out there with their horses. APAP painters can paint the horses, riders, and the views all around. You can come for the day or camp. Bring your lunch & water. More directions will be coming. It is really beautiful and sometimes gets snow.
